Border Control is Anti-Terrorism
One of the most important counter-terrorism efforts America can focus on is securing its nations borders, with absolutely no apologies.
A good example of another country’s effort to maximize this same security effort is the Saudi Arabian Border Guards, which are part of the Ministry of the Interior. They combine the duties of a border patrol, coast guard, customs police (like the "finance guards" in some European countries), and even fisheries police. They are armed as light troops. On paper total strength is supposed to be about 25,000. They man approximately 300-350 posts, bases, and other installations. The Border Guard can call on a special tribal militia for additional support. These militia also belong to the National Guard. These are real desert Arabs, descendants of the tribes that brought the House of Saud to power, and are ideal for patrolling the country's long desert frontiers. When properly equipped and trained, the Border Guard and its tribal auxiliary would be much more effective at securing the country's frontiers.
Just as Saudi Arabia has maximized its resources on their borders, so too can the USA. Establishing specialized troop units on the borders, while utilizing the many native patriotic militia groups ready to assist in this important effort would make more than just a tangible difference, but also a political statement.
The biggest issue in the media today is the ongoing influx of illegal immigrants coming through the Mexican border. By establishing a true border military force, the numbers of illegals entering would obviously decrease.
The real benefit would be in the form of declaring that the USA, although a generous and welcoming nation, has the right and responsibility to protect its borders from invasion. Today, the real threat is an invasion of covert Islamic Imperialists filtering through our porous borders. It is never an insult to others when a nation works to protect its citizens, so we have no apologies to make for wanting our borders more secure, and in a military fashion, not just a modified police force.
